How Long? Not Long!

It is a tempting overstatement to say that the scene, below, reblogged from ayse, is a fulfillment (or near fulfillment—Obama is not President yet) of MLK’s prophecy in this famous conclusion of his speech in Montgomery, AL, after the Selma to Montgomery March.

And yet.

I said that the photo, below, gives me the chills because there is in that moment a sense that Obama affirms a very real yearning that so many of us share for a more just and equitable America, for an America that will finally begin to try to fulfill its broken promises to its people.

It is the yearning that roars from the crowd at the end of MLK’s speech.

I do not often dare hope. It will take so much more than Barack Obama as President.

And yet…
