Star Dust is one of my favorite songs of all time. And this version by Ella is one of the greatest renditions that I know. The only recording that even begins to give it a run for its money is the Louis Armstrong big band interpretation. But no use in comparing apples and oranges. The thing to say about this one is that it is from Ella’s pre-songbook recordings of the Gershwin songbook. In these recordings, Ella does an elegant kind of jazz singing that swings hard. I also cannot overstate the greatness of the Ellis Larkins piano accompaniment on these recordings. The later orchestrated American Songbook stuff really can’t hold a candle to these gems.
