‘Landscape with the Fall of Icarus’ by William Carlos Williams
According to Brueghel
when Icarus fell
it was springa farmer was ploughing
his field
the whole pageantryof the year was
awake tingling
nearthe edge of the sea
concerned
with itselfsweating in the sun
that melted
the wings’ waxunsignificantly
off the coast
there wasa splash quite unnoticed
this was
Icarus drowning
Oh so pleasing to be surprised with a poem by Williams this morning. Thanks, snarkattack-gracenotes!
