Popular discussions of Carmichael often leave out the fact that the original Black Panthers, led by him and others, emerged in rural Lowndes County, AL, as an outgrowth of the SNCC supported Lowndes County Freedom Organization. Carmichael’s work with the Lowndes County Black Panthers was direct community-based organizing and was probably a greater contribution to the Movement than what he did with the urban groups that solicited his guidance.
Black Power activist Stokely Carmichael was born June 29, 1941 (d. 1998).
“He rose to prominence first as a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC, pronounced “Snick”) and later as the “Honorary Prime Minister” of the Black Panther Party. Initially an integrationist, Carmichael later became affiliated with black nationalist and Pan-Africanist movements.” (Wiki)
