Killing Them Safely - Trailer (by Nick Berardini)
In the summer of 2008, Stanley Harlan was pulled over by police in the small Missouri town of Moberly. Minutes later, he was fighting for his life. It was a fight he would ultimately lose. As he lay dying in front of his mother, who begged for an ambulance, police officers mocked him. On August 28, 2008, just after midnight, Stanley Harlan was...

Arizona Helped Deport 26,000 without New Law →
abbyjean:
Without the benefit of their state’s strict new immigration law, officers from a single Arizona county helped deport more than 26,000 immigrants from the U.S. through a federal-local partnership program that has been roundly criticized as fraught with problems. Statistics obtained by The Associated Press show that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was responsible for deportations or...

Coroner Calls Death of Mississippi Man Homicide,... →
On my other blog.
Jermaine Williams, a 30-year-old African-American man from Bolivar County, MS, died in police custody on July 23, 2010. Little has been released about the circumstances of his death—except that the local deputy coroner is calling it a homicide by taser.

DYKCTV: “Porter” (by Do You KNOW Clarence?)
Filmed and edited on an iPhone 4 by Mr. @dykc. Nice work Clarence. You took an experience from my everyday, took it apart and put it back together again and gave it drama I didn’t know it had.

– lamlux.net: Photography with a meterless camera.
A photographer friend of mine taught me to spot meter from my SLR on something more or less neutral grey (caucasian skin, concrete, grass) and choose my settings and then forget about them and shoot away. I don’t always shoot this way, but the...

NEWSPAPER BLACKOUT AT THE AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART →
I was pretty thrilled when The Austin Museum of Art asked me if I wanted to do a Newspaper Blackout event. We got to display a mini-exhibit of originals and prints, and I led a 90 minute blackout poetry workshop. It was a great time, and we had a terrific turnout.
Congrats, Austin!

Watch: Jack White Sings “Mother Nature’s Son” at White House
Last month, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, Jerry Seinfeld, Emmylou Harris, and others joined President Obama at the White House for a tribute concert in honor of Paul McCartney. Though a video of the closing credits — featuring the whole troupe singing along to “Hey Jude” — surfaced the morning after,...

Hear Jeff Tweedy Sing "You Are Not Alone"
twentyfourbit:
Earlier this month, the title track off Mavis Staples’ forthcoming album, You Are Not Alone, (one of two new songs penned for the iconic singer by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy), premiered on Pitchfork. And though the inspirational tune seamlessly took its place among Staples’ timeless oeuvre, I couldn’t help but imagine the LP’s producer, Tweedy himself, joining the backup singers for one...

From my other blog.
We are to suppose, then, that when police arrive on a scene where fighting that they have not observed has reportedly occurred it is acceptable to brandish weapons to gain compliance from black men. We are to suppose it is proper procedure to threaten any young black man with weapons if he is suspected of having been fighting prior to the arrival of the police.
We are also to...
